MEET NATALIE

Serving Berkley by Building Community

I grew up in Toledo, OH, but even though I was raised in a medium-sized city, my parents taught me the value of small-town community. My neighbors were an extension of my family, and guests at my high school graduation party included our mail carrier, mechanics, and hair stylist. When my family moved from Ann Arbor to Berkley four years ago, we quickly felt at home. As a stay-at-home mom, I frequently use the Berkley Community Center, the public parks and playgrounds, the Berkley Public Library, and our walkable downtown to entertain and educate my kids. Neighbors and fellow parents are eager to help whenever we need an extra set of hands. We are proud to call Berkley our home and thrilled that our children will grow up with Berkley as their hometown.

In addition to being a stay-at-home mom, I am a lifelong educator. I taught high school English for seven years, and I continue to teach in both part-time and volunteer roles. I recently volunteered as the Student Engagement Team Leader for Voters Not Politicians, the statewide group that successfully ended gerrymandering with the passing of Proposal 2 on the November ballot. I also implemented an extensive service project in Berkley when I brought together MOMS Club, Public Safety, the Community Center, City Hall, the Library, Public Works, Backyard Playroom, Berkley First, and a local business to help raise over 28,000 diapers for local families in need. This is the kind of collaboration and teamwork that our city needs as we face the challenges and opportunities ahead, and my experience as an educator gives me the skills to get this work done.

Before I became a professional educator, I became a highly trained researcher and expert communicator. I graduated with departmental honors from Vassar College and earned a Master’s Degree in English from the University of Exeter in the U.K. When I face an important decision, I gather facts, talk to experts, and ultimately implement the best practices available. As the Chair of Berkley's Citizens Engagement Advisory Committee, I currently use these skills in order to expand and improve the ways in which city staff and elected leaders communicate with the residents.

On that note, I encourage you to use whichever method of communication you most prefer in order to get in touch with me and help me get to know you. No matter how you prefer to get in touch, I am eager to meet you and learn what issues matter most to you and your neighbors.
